Let’s Get to Work

Editing that Makes Sense

about vigil editing

You’ve written a manuscript. Great! If you need help, that’s where we come in. We offer a variety of packages for every stage in a novelist’s life–including early drafts. For over 11 years, we’ve worked with writers at every level and understand the mechanics that can take them to the next step, whatever that next step might be.

We’ll do more than make notes and point out errors on your manuscript. Our rates automatically include an edit letter and report for your manuscript, with suggestions on where you can go from here.

our services

proofreading

a.k.a. read my book and point out the snags before the bystanders do

A single read of a manuscript that includes pointing out obvious errors, typos, missing words, incorrect grammar and punctuation, and a general sense of the story/first impressions. A good option to add another level of polish to previously copyedited work, or to get a clean draft ready for submission or publication. Not recommended for first drafts or work that has not been copyedited already.

developmental editing

a.k.a. i need someone to help me turn this trainwreck around

A single read of a manuscript plus a detailed dive into the skeleton of your manuscript with the intent of ripping it apart so you can put it back together with intent.

We’re going to look at pacing, themes, story, character development, and most importantly, structure. This is not intended to polish a manuscript right before publication. Expect an extra 2-3 months of revisions after you receive your notes and report.

Recommended for: first drafts, or subsequent drafts that just don’t work. We can also work with undeveloped and unfinished drafts (you wrote three chapters and don’t know where to take it from there), or story ideas.

$0.010 USD /word for existing drafts or $300 USD for a consultation and report to help develop a story idea.

copyediting

a.k.a. a fresh coat of paint over an existing wall

Two read-throughs of a manuscript that includes everything you get for a proofread plus a more detailed look at word choice, sentence structure, style, and content with the intention of polishing up the manuscript for self-publication.

Not recommended for first drafts! If we feel a novel is better suited for more detailed revisions first, we will let the writer know and make the appropriate suggestions.

Editing is never a one and done deal, and our goal for edits is to help the author get their book into shape for the next step. We do not guarantee our edits will push a manuscript into its “final form,” nor should any editor. Our pricing is intended to take this into account. You can request another round after revisions and get 25% off the next invoice for the same manuscript.

not sure what you need? We can help with that.

Not Your Run of the Mill Editing

why hire us?

because you care about story. your story.

Because you don’t want an editor to be just a check mark before publication. You don’t just want someone who will point out your errors or the ‘correct way to do things’. You actually want experienced eyes on your manuscript–eyes that understand story and the elements that make for compelling writing in your chosen genre. You want to revise with a solid plan–and you need the partner that can push your manuscript closer to your vision.

We’re writers with proven professional success in the industry and over 11 years of reading and editorial experience. We have experience with drafts at every stage of a writer’s journey and understand how to make revisions work in order to improve a writer’s skill towards story structure. We respect experienced writers who know what they want and need help to polish their manuscript to the next level, but we’re also equipped to hand-hold fledgling writers who are not quite sure where to go after finishing their first drafts.

What sets us apart from other editors is our passion and commitment to your writing journey. We’re conscious of the creative process and provide gentle, kind advice and suggestions. As creatives ourselves, we know artists can be sensitive souls, and criticism at any stage needn’t be callous. We’re here to help you make your vision come to life.

genres

We can help you with your manuscript no matter what the genre, but our editors are particularly experienced with the following:

  • Epic fantasy
  • General fantasy
  • Urban fantasy
  • Historical romance
  • Contemporary romance
  • Progression fantasy
  • Character-heavy narratives
  • Thriller
  • Action adventure

let’s talk about your project!

Tell us about your genre, word count, and other details about your project you think we should know–what your plans are, what you want to improve, where you think we fit with your overall goals. We think good editing shouldn’t break the bank and are happy to offer payment plans.
