Vilum was born a servant’s son in an official’s household in Dageis. He showed early signs of connection to the agan. Although not a slave, his lower caste barred him from the extremely expensive mage education required for such children, which only left one last option: to be raised as a mage-thrall. Mage-thralls stand as glorified servants for mages–because of their powers, they are seen as a threat and cannot function as a free citizen in Dageian society, with huge restrictions imposed on them.
An incident of abuse within Sarus arak-Hegas’ household, where Vilum resided, caused an investigation. Keeper Ordan of Eheldeth came out and learned that Vilum was the bastard son of Jirem rog-Bannal, Bearer Osog rog-Bannal of Enji’s younger brother. He took Vilum into custody and made arrangements to send him to Lake Enji.
Bearer Osog urged his brother to have Vilum educated at Eheldeth, but Jirem could not bear the expense, especially with his daughter Ceres still finishing up her own studies. Vilum was trained solely in Lake Enji, which saw him as a sufficient, but somewhat mediocre mage.
“And stop it with the goat,” Vilum added. “By Agartes’ balls, you make one mistake in your life…”
