A recent topic in my writing group involved our subconscious, and how writing stories sometimes feels like you know what you’re doing even if you don’t. Example: wondering how you’re going to pull off a deliciously complicated plot, going back to your manuscript to delete things (and burn your computer while you’re at it), and then realizing that it all FITS together. You don’t even know how it got to that point but it’s just so perfect.
Writing sometimes feels less like composing something out of the blue and more like a session of connect-the-dots. I think that is a big part of the craft: being able to see what makes a good story, and then, consciously or unconsciously, applying those elements to your own. People write stories for a lot of reasons but I’ve often found that the really good writers are just as fascinated with their own stories as they are with others’. They are less concerned about the image they portray (“Look! I write!”), and more concerned about…well, everything else.
Oh, right; my publisher is having a Goodreads Giveaway for Jaeth’s Eye. LINK! If you don’t win it, and you really don’t want to buy it, just hang around because we’ll do more freebies over the next few months. Or comment below with your email and I’ll send you a couple of chapters (don’t forget, the Prologue and Chapter 1 is out there somewhere).
