The Heroes of The Agartes Epilogues: Sapphire and Moon

The Orsalian sisters are introduced in Jaeth’s Eye, having hired Kefier as a quick guide and able body in their journeys through the wilderness in Gaspar.

The sisters grew up in a poor neighbourhood in the port city of Aret-ni, on the eastern shore of Gaspar. Their mother was descended from Jinseins who traveled north across the border in search of a better life, away from the drama and scandals of Jin-Sayeng clans. They inherited their Jinsein mother’s black hair and honey-coloured skin.

While alike in looks–Moon is somewhat smaller and more graceful–the sisters can’t be anymore different in temperament. Moon is cheerful and optimistic; Sapphire is serious and practical. Whereas Moon will give a helping hand, Sapphire would rather offer scathing remarks. Both are intelligent and well-educated, a gift from their father. Both are also mages, students of the prestigious school of Eheldeth in the Dageian Plateau, which means they have been formally trained in working with the agan, the binding life-force in the world.

The Agartes Epilogues only shows the point-of-views of the heroes through the Interlude sections. They are otherwise seen through the eyes of the “minor” characters, who respond to them in different ways. Why are they the heroes, then? I define this solely by the way these characters think, and their larger-than-life ideologies.

Moon had this notion that life is not a random occurrence, or at least that even if it were, we owed it to ourselves to make something more from it. It is not just about waking up to go through the motions and then die. She talked about purpose, about changing the world beyond ourselves. How else do we give meaning to the mundane, and make sense out of needless suffering and the transience of this all?
